Accommodations and Services

Courtesy shuttles operate regularly throughout the day and evening. When you arrive at Family House, a staff member or volunteer will give you an updated shuttle schedule. Complimentary Breakfast

Family House does not provide medical assistance or home care services. Every patient must be accompanied by a caregiver, during their entire stay, to be eligible to stay at Family House. Family House provides a complimentary, daily healthy breakfast. Additionally, there is a complimentary food pantry stocked with essentials so that guests can cook their own meals.

Parking & Shuttles

Family House has a limited number of on-site parking spaces, and we cannot guarantee on-site parking. Alternatively, parking is available in a nearby annexed lot. Unfortunately, many families arrive at Family House feeling anxious, desperate, frightened, and worried while facing a medical emergency in an unfamiliar city. While many of our patients and families are experiencing transplantation, surgery, and treatment for cancer and other serious illnesses, others have come to Pittsburgh unexpectedly due to traumatic accidents or an abruptly diagnosed emergency. These guests may arrive without the necessities of modern life, such as identification, checks, credit or debit cards, and often without even the most basic or appropriate clothing for weather conditions. They are exhausted and confused, facing days or months of medical treatment or long periods of sitting at a loved one’s bedside.

Guests are welcome to request staff and volunteers wear a mask during their interactions. Those who are feeling ill or experiencing COVID-19 symptoms should mask while in public spaces. We also request they limit their time in public spaces, if feeling ill. This policy is subject to change based on the Allegheny County (PA) COVID-19 transmission rate. Patients who are seeking medical treatment at Pittsburgh area hospitals, as well as their family members and caregivers, are welcome to stay at Family House.

The Pittsburgh-based realtor, a community and business leader, helped identify and acquire Family House’s second property on Neville Street. We provide our guests with conveniences like private rooms for lodging, along with nourishing meals, free transportation to local hospitals, communal programs, and other supportive resources. By staying at Family House, our guests are able to find the rest, comfort, and support that can positively impact their health journey.

Throughout the year, dozens of volunteer groups come to Family House to prepare and serve dinners for guests. Yes, all patients staying at Family House must have a caregiver who is a person age 18 or over. This person is solely responsible for the patient with whom they are staying. They must be emotionally and physically able to care for the patient and themselves, and they must be able to assist in possible decision-making. Multiple caregivers are permitted as long as there is not a lapse in patient support.

Yet, as it began moving forward with plans to create a two-house, 121-room operation to meet the organization’s long-term needs, serendipity interceded with news that the Shadyside Courtyard by Marriott was for sale. On September 27, 1983, UHCP President Joel Ettinger and Mary Lou McLaughlin, Family House’s first Executive Director, dedicated Family House at McKee Place—the first of what would eventually become four Family Houses located close to Pittsburgh hospitals. Under conditions of maximum stress, family members—often facing the loss of two incomes—had to improvise living arrangements at costly hotels or apartments, sometimes even sleeping in hospital waiting rooms or their cars. Further,without access to a nearby, safe, homelike option, patients were often forced to stay in the hospital longer than needed. In these situations, both the financial and emotional costs could be devastating. For over 40 years, Family House has been providing a safe, affordable, and comfortable place to stay for patients and their families who travel to Pittsburgh to receive the exceptional medical care offered by our region.

Out of concern for the health of our immunosuppressed guests, Family House does not allow pets. If you will be accompanied by a certified service dog, please notify our housing office when you are making your room request. “I am proud that Family House was the only health care hospitality lodging facility in Western Pennsylvania to remain open throughout the pandemic,” said executive director Jennifer March. Please note our on-site parking lot cannot accommodate oversized vehicles, but our annexed lot can. Also, please note that all vehicles must be removed from Family House property when guests check out and return keys.

Families and their loved ones facing life-threatening illnesses were welcomed to Family House by a crew of compassionate staff and volunteers to live and cook their own meals in specially designed shared kitchens and dining areas. All could recover and recuperate in comfortable surroundings for as little as $15 per night, or even less for those unable to pay. Every family became a member of all the families at Family House supported by staff and volunteers who saw their work not as a job but as deep, meaningful purpose. Within weeks of opening, the 39 rooms of Family House McKee were constantly filled, with an ever-growing waiting list. In 1985, Family House became a separate 501c3 charitable organization guided by a devoted Board of healthcare and community leaders, and hundreds of volunteers and staff. Among the handful of Family House founders was Howard “Hoddy” Hanna III.
